Christopher Peter Lavender
Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation
What changes have you seen at HKYAF over the past 24 years?
Innovation is all about change, and as HKYAF is stacked full of imagination and innovation in all its guises – visual and performing arts – there’s constant and exciting change. However, what doesn’t change is the extraordinary quality of every production, year on year, and the unbridled enthusiasm of the HKYAF team and all the YAFies!
What have been your most memorable experiences at HKYAF?
Meeting Lindsey the first few times. The first time she was a six foot blonde in a black trouser suit, the next time she had purple hair – I was blown off my feet!
Production-wise it’s a very close tussle between the always fabulous flagship production, which I build my travels around, and the fantastic Hong Kong event that is Standard Chartered Arts in the Park. Both are magical occasions, and I always leave with a smile on my face feeling so proud to be associated with the HKYAF team.
What expectations do you have for HKYAF?
I have great expectations – primarily that HKYAF will continue to lead the way in youth arts in Hong Kong, addressing matters of social concern and daily life in a sensitive and hugely entertaining style. Their track record is exemplary – reaching out to young people from all socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
What is your life motto?
Life is all about people. My career has been all about working with and managing people – empowering them and offering them opportunities to improve their lives. There’s no greater reward than seeing people make the most of their opportunities.
What advice would you give to young people who are passionate about the arts?
Join HKYAF! Follow your passion and learn through participation. Have faith in yourself, learn to work in a team and engage with others. Express yourself in whatever medium suits your very special talents.
Which artist do you admire the most?
Judi Dench – for her compassion, her versatility, and her beautiful and sensitive interpretation of the human condition.
